The present invention relates to an image encoding/decoding method using block transform and an apparatus thereof and provides an image encoding apparatus. In the image encoding apparatus, each pixel in the current block of an image is encoded before the current block is encoded. The image encoding apparatus encodes an image by using and predicting at least one pixel adjacent to each pixel in a determined prediction direction, wherein the current block has L X M dimensions and the L value is not equal to the M value. According to the invention, the pixels in the block can be predicted from the most adjacent pixel in a spatial prediction direction. Therefore, compression efficiency can be improved by increasing the prediction accuracy of the blocks. In addition, an image can be encoded and decoded efficiently through improvement of the compression efficiency.
