<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for measuring a preload that can obviate the need of checking a relationship between a physical amount to be measured and a preload beforehand, and can be applied to a completed product. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method for measuring a preload, while measuring the rotational torque of a hub unit for supporting a wheel, a radial load F<SB>1</SB>applied to the hub unit for supporting the wheel is gradually increased. At the moment when a phenomenon in which the magnitude of the rotational torque is abruptly lowered occurs, a value of a load rate ε at that moment in relation to a ball row of which the number of balls 3 existing in a load zone is considered to be reduced is determined to be 1. In addition to this , a radial load F<SB>r</SB>applied to the ball row at that moment is obtained. A preload is obtained on the basis of the determined load rate ε=1, the radial load F<SB>r</SB>and a specification relating to the ball row.
