The method involves adjusting output speed of an internal combustion engine (12) to a target speed during a switching process of an automatic transmission i.e. dual clutch transmission (14), of a drive train (10) of a motor vehicle. Torque provided by the combustion engine after execution of the switching process is adjusted to a course of an adjusting function corresponding to desired torque of a driver after the execution of the switching process. Air quantity supplied to the combustion engine and an ignition point are changed depending on the adjusting function. An independent claim is also included for a controller for controlling an internal combustion engine of a drive train of a motor vehicle.
