The method involves determining desired adjustment for a panel device (22) based on a measured spatial position of a focal spot (10) and based on principles of beam propagation, where an X-ray illumination field (40) possesses a desired external limitation on a detector surface (30). The panel device is adjusted according to the determined desired adjustment by an actuating drive (48). The spatial position of the focal spot is determined during predetermined panel adjustment and based on X-ray intensity distribution or based on the limitation of the X-ray field on the surface.
