PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanning apparatus in which the tilt and curve characteristic of scanning line are detected quickly and accurately, the image quality adjusting time is shortened upon rising and during a mass printing, usability is improved and the consumption of toner is suppressed, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the optical scanning apparatus. SOLUTION: The optical scanning apparatus 32, which forms a latent image by scanning the surface of an image carrier 4 with a laser beam 1 emitted from a light source 10 with a deflection and scanning means 12 and a scanning and imaging optical system, includes: laser beam detection means P1, P2 which detect the laser beam 1, provided on the optical path of the laser beam 1 in an image area in front of the image carrier 4; and a scanning line detection means 3 which detects the tilt and the curve of the scanning line on the image carrier 4 on the basis of the detection information of the laser beam detection means P1, P2.
