<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic shock absorber for an elevator capable of suppressing waste of electric power consumption and reducing speed of an elevating body accurately by electromagnetic action when the elevating body is going to collide with a shock absorbing member to stop the elevating body. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This electromagnetic shock absorber for the elevator is provided with a car 2 elevating, lowering, and moving in a shaft 1 of the elevator, a travel speed detection device 17 for detecting travel speed of the car 2, a first electromagnet 7 provided in a pit part 6 in the shaft 1, a second electromagnet 13 provided in the car 2 by opposing to the first electromagnet 7, an electric power supply device for supplying electric power into the first and second electromagnets 7, 13, and a control part for controlling in such a way that electric power is supplied into the first and second electromagnets 7, 13 through the electric power supply device based on signals to excite them when it is detected by the travel speed detection device 17 that the car 2 lowers at such speed that exceeds the predetermined speed and electromagnetic repulsion force is generated between both of the electromagnets 7, 13.
