The method involves monitoring surrounding region (U) lying directly behind a vehicle by sensor units (S1-S7). The sensor units are operated such that transmitting signals transmitted are received as direct echo from one of the sensor unit and as a cross echo from another sensor unit. A duration of the transmitting signals received as a cross-echo is compared with a given cross echo threshold value (K2), and the transmitting signals received as the cross echo is only provided, where the transmitting signals are smaller than the cross echo threshold value.
