The device (2) has an operating element (13) i.e. touch screen, detecting user inputs. A user identification device identifies an user based on high frequency signals transmitted through a body of the user. An electrically conductive element i.e. conductive path (15), is provided for functionality of the operating element during detection of the user inputs independent of receiving of the transmitted high frequency signals. The conductive element is coupled with an evaluation unit (18). The user identification device includes a transmission unit (7) coupled with a transmission electrode. An independent claim is also included for a method for user-dependent detecting of user inputs and controlling of a vehicle system in a motor vehicle.
