Image data (still image data) are encoded to create video data. When an intermittent recording mode has been set, a plurality of video data created by an encoder (image compressor (42)) are merged and recorded as one intermittent video data. In the intermittent recording mode, power supply to the encoder is interrupted when encoding of the image data is completed. When power supply to the encoder has been interrupted, power supply to the encoder is resumed the next time it becomes necessary to encode image data. Continuity data necessary to create multiple video data to make intermittent video data into a stream that can be continuously played back are managed while power supply to the encoder is interrupted.
