PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waste ink recovery device accurately detecting that a waste ink tank is retained, and storing and recovering a large amount of waste ink in the waste ink tank. SOLUTION: The waste ink recovery device 30 is mounted to an ink jet printer having a printer head and a maintenance station. The waste ink recovery device 30 is equipped with: the waste ink tank 3, a movable member 40 mounted to the ink jet printer to be vertically movable and removably holding the waste ink tank 3; a tension spring 38 for energizing the movable member 40 upward in the whole vertically moving area of the movable member 40; a compression spring 39 for energizing the movable member 40 upward in a moving area below a predetermined vertical position within the moving area of the movable member 40; and a position sensor 33 for detecting a stored amount of the waste ink by detecting a vertical position of the movable member 40 vertically moving according to the amount of the waste ink stored in the waste ink tank 3.
