<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photodetecting element which operates at a low voltage and has an improved optical amplification factor per thickness and is therefore made thin, to provide a photodetection method, to provide an imaging element, and to provide an imaging method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The photodetecting element includes an optical amplification part and a photoelectric conversion part. The optical amplification part includes a light retention structure and a gain medium, and the light retention structure and the gain medium are arranged adjacently to each other.
