<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper money identifying apparatus for performing enforced storage control so that utilization rate of a vending machine does not deteriorate. <P>SOLUTION: In the paper money identifying machine 10 mounted on the vending machine or a money changer and for performing denomination determination and true or false determination of a received paper money, a paper money to be returned is forcibly stored by driving and controlling conveyance rollers 12a to 12c of a conveyance path 12 if paper money jamming is detected based on a detection signal from a sensor 14 when a thrown paper money is not accepted by determination of a paper money identifying unit 13 or when being returned by a return request etc. from a customer. Then a 7-segment LED display unit 18 provided at a back surface portion of a case is switched to an alarm display for notifying compulsive storage of the returned paper money and to a display of the number of sheets of the paper money performed compulsive storage.
