PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten read time of a read region optionally designated on both the sides of an original. SOLUTION: Based on the positions of downstream ends C1, C2 and upstream ends D1, D2 in first and second regions 30A, 30B optionally designated on both the sides of the original 24, the arrangement relationship between downstream and upstream sides of first and second read sections 11A, 11B, and a spacing K between both the read sections are decided from: a downstream end spacing G1 between the downstream ends C1, C2 of both the regions 30A, 30B; an upstream end spacing G2 between the upstream ends D1, D2; lengths LA, LB of respective regions 30A, 30B; relationship on which of the respective regions is disposed at a downstream side (upstream side) to a conveyance direction, and the like. The downstream ends C1, C2 of both the regions 30A, 30B of the conveyed original 24 simultaneously oppose the first and second read sections 11A, 11B set in this manner, and both the regions 30A, 30B are read in parallel.
