<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white line detection device capable of consistently detecting a white line even when the solar beam is reflected by a road surface. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image pickup device picks up an image of a part in front of one's own vehicle via a polarization filter group 16 in which a plurality of polarization filters 16A-16D slender in the vehicle width direction and having different polarization directions of the light to be transmitted are arrayed in the vehicular vertical direction. A white line detection device detects a white line on a road surface based on the brightness value of a scan line area in which the change of the brightness value of each pixel in the area is equal to or more than the threshold out of a plurality of scan line areas corresponding to the plurality of polarization filters 16A-16D of an image of a forward road surface picked up by the image pickup device.
