The method involves activating a spark plug (8) in a determining phase, where the plug extends in sections into an accommodating area i.e. cooking chamber (2), of a household appliance i.e. backing oven (1). A parameter that is characteristic to a ground is detected value-relatedly to a discharge spark spring (9) of the plug. The humidity in the accommodating area is determined depending on the parameter. The plug is arranged in a defined distance of smaller than 6 mm to the ground. A temperature sensor (7) for detecting the temperature in the accommodating area is designed as the ground.
