The method involves determining clutch loss-torque as a function of torque transmitted by friction clutches (K1, K2) in an actual friction condition. Reference values for torque produced by an internal combustion engine (12) are determined depending on the determined clutch loss-torque. Speed difference occurring at the friction clutches is considered depending on the determined reference values for the torque produced by the internal combustion engine. The speed difference is considered such that a base value of the clutch loss-torque is multiplied with a slip factor. An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling an internal combustion engine in a drive train of a motor vehicle.
