<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately sense the approach and contact of an object to be sensed in a simple construction. <P>SOLUTION: A capacitance type sensor 10 includes: a sensing electrode 11 for sensing a capacitance between the electrode and an object to be sensed; a shield electrode 12 for shielding sensing of the sensing electrode 11 in a predetermined direction; and an insulative covering member 13 that covers these electrodes 11, 12 separated with a predetermined interval L and are mounted on an edge 2a of a door 2. An approach determination device includes the sensor and a detecting circuit section 20 for determining contact or the like of the object to be sensed, based on a sensing signal from the capacitance type sensor 10. In the capacitance type sensor 10 and approach determination device constructed in such a manner that contact or non-contact of the object to be sensed is accurately detected with the capacitance type sensor 10, in a simple construction.
