ELECTRON EMITTING DEVICE, ELECTRON SOURCE, VISUAL DISPLAY UNIT, INFORMATION DISPLAY REPRODUCING APPARATUS, AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emitting device which has stable electron emission characteristics having a small variation for a long term, and also to provide an electron source.

SOLUTION: The electron emitting device includes a pair of conductive films separated and placed in a first direction on the surface of a substrate; and a plurality of carbon films which connect a pair of conductive films, respectively, have gaps, and are separated from each other and placed in a second direction that differs from the first direction. The device is characterized in that: a part of the surface of the substrate is exposed between the plurality of carbon films in the second direction; and the exposed part is one part of the surface of the substrate and is composed of a material that suppresses deposition of carbon in comparison with a material constituting the part covered by the plurality of carbon films.
