<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of coping with various media and detecting movement information of media with high accuracy to attain image formation of excellent quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The printer is provided with a contact member 1101 contacting the surface of a medium to impart optically distinguishable rugged shape to the surface of the medium, upstream of an imaging position by a sensor unit 701 in a medium conveying direction.
