PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify its structure, in a variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This variable valve gear of the internal combustion engine is provided so that first cams 17i and 17e and second cams 18i and 18e lower in a lift than these first cams 17i and 17e, are juxtaposed on a valve system camshaft 16, and one operation of these first cams and second cams is alternately selected, and an engine valve is opened and closed by operation of its selected cam. While relatively rotatably arranging the first cams 17i and 17e on the valve system camshaft 16, the second cams 18i and 18e are fixed to the valve system camshaft 16, and the first cams 17i and 17e are connected with a mode switching device capable of alternately switching an operation mode of connecting these first cams 17i and 17e to the valve system camshaft 16, and a nonoperating mode of releasing its connection.
