The present invention relates to RuII complexes and their uses in cellular imaging especially in luminescent imaging nuclear DNA. The invention also includes methods of imaging specific nuclear process and monitoring such processes over prolonged periods of time and methods of assessing cell viability and methods of preferentially imaging cancer cells.
