PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep the image quality regardless of fluctuation of physical registration generated between a recording apparatus and a recording medium, to suppress granular deterioration depending on the low frequency component of an image, and to make it possible to form the image with the high image quality. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus calculates respective recording amounts of a plurality of recording elements on every recording scanning of a recording head in accordance with image data, and restricting information indicating ease to select as a dot forming position on the positions of respective recording elements is acted on the calculated recording amounts to apply an N-nary processing (N is an integer of 2 or larger), to prepare a dot pattern in the recording scanning. In addition, the image forming apparatus detects physical amounts of variation on at least either a recording head and a recording medium during performing a plurality of numbers of recording scanning. Then, based on the calculated recording amount, the prepared dot pattern, and the detected amount of variation, the restricting information is renewed.
