<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical seal device for a vertical shaft, wherein reliable cleaning and sterilization are applied to a contact face between a stationary sealing ring and a rotary sealing ring as the seal part of a mechanical seal. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The mechanical seal device for the vertical shaft includes a first mechanical seal MS1 consisting of the rotary sealing ring 4 to be integrally rotated with the vertical shaft 1, the stationary sealing ring 5, a sliding ring 6 encircling a rotating shaft 1 and supported in an up-and-down movable manner by a seal housing 3, a coil spring 7 for moving up the stationary sealing ring 5 to be pushed against the rotary sealing ring 4, a coil spring 8 for separating the stationary sealing ring 5 from the rotary sealing ring 4, an air cylinder 9 for forcibly moving up the sliding ring 6 against the energizing force of the separating coil spring 8, a liquid sealing mechanism for circulating cooling liquid filled into a sealing space part 30, and a cylindrical weir part 11 for promoting the cooling operation of the seal part S1, and a second mechanical seal MS2 for a tandem.
