<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device and method accurately detecting a position of a rotor in a short period of time. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device is equipped with: an acquisition part for acquiring a detection signal for expressing the fact of detecting the passing of a tooth caused by rotation of a crankshaft from a detection device; and a control part for executing control processing for controlling an engine constituted of a crank provided with the rotor based on a rotational angle of the rotor having the tooth for expressing the passing by the detection signal. The control part further executes first determining processing for determining whether a part of the rotor passing through the detection device is a chipped tooth part of chipping the tooth by using an acquisition interval for acquiring the detection signal by the acquisition part, and second determining processing for determining whether the part is the chipped tooth part by using the acquisition interval more than the number of acquisition interval used in the first determining processing when determining that the part is the chipped tooth part in the first determining processing.
