<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode active material which gives an electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in which capacity maintenance rate, that is, low temperature characteristics can be improved when charge and discharge are repeated at low temperatures. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electrode active material is characterized by: consisting of carbon materials, in which the ratio I of the maximum intensity B of a peak of half-value width ≤0.01 nm observed in a range of surface spacing 0.33 nm to 0.345 nm against the maximum intensity A is ≤5 in amorphous carbon originated diffraction peak, in a powder X-ray diffraction pattern; having at least one or more peaks in a range of 0.05 V to 0.5 V, in a spectrum which shows the inverse number (dT/dV) of time change of a voltage (V) obtained when carrying out a constant current test of the carbon material using lithium metal for a counter electrode consists of a carbon material; and having the value R obtained by dividing X by Y is ≥1.2, where the maximum value of the vertical axis at the maximum peak is X, and the minimum value of the vertical axis at the voltage smaller than the voltage at the peak is Y, among the peaks.
