PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a triangular planar cutting insert having longitudinal cutting edges and an insert detachable type rotary cutting tool with the cutting insert capable of rigidly clamping the cutting insert to a cutting tool body. SOLUTION: The cutting insert has a triangular plate-like external shape with a top surface 2a, a bottom surface, and three side surfaces 3. A main cutting edge 5 is formed by an edge portion E where the top surface 2a and side surfaces 3 intersect with each other, and an edge portion E where the bottom surface and side surfaces 3 intersect with each other. Sub-cutting edges 6 are formed by an edge portion F where the adjacent side surfaces 3 intersect with each other. When the cutting insert 1 is mounted on the cutting tool body, constraining surfaces 8, which are brought in contact with a seating surface of the cutting tool body and constrain relative motion of the cutting insert 1 with respect to the cutting tool body, are formed on intermediate portions of the side surfaces 3 in the thickness direction of the cutting insert 1.
