PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high-speed IP facsimile communication in real time capable of dispensing with a mail server. SOLUTION: A facsimile communication system includes a plurality of FAX adapters 81 connected to a VPN and a PSTN. A facsimile device 71 can be connected to a FAX terminal connection port 62 of the FAX adapter 81. When data from the facsimile device 71 are received via the FAX terminal connection port 62, the FAX adapter 81 transmits facsimile image data by being subjected to direct SMTP connection to the FAX adapter of an IP address corresponding to a transmission destination number via the VPN. When there is no IP address corresponding to the transmission destination number, the FAX adapter 81 transmits facsimile image data by being connected to the facsimile device of the transmission destination number via a PSTN 51.
