<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an escalator avoiding a serious accident by forcibly putting back a passenger body inside a handrail even if the passenger leans boldly out of the handrail, in the safety device arranged at a triangular part which is an intersecting part of an up escalator and a building ceiling or a beam section or an intersecting part of the up escalator and a down escalator. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The safety device 5, composed of a guide plate 6 shaped to gradually guide upward from downward relative to the upper face of a moving handrail 3, and of a guide plate 8 shaped to gradually guide toward the surface of a perpendicular wall 7 from the outside of the perpendicular wall 7 of the down escalator lower face on the outside of the moving handrail 3. Consequently, even if leaning boldly to the outside of the moving handrail 3 of the escalator, the body can be forcibly retreated from the dangerous triangular part by the guide plates 6, 7.
