The method involves determining two target distances behind target vehicles (1-N). An acceleration value required for an appropriate vehicle (E) is determined to dock the appropriate vehicle in one of the target distances to a momentary lane (M) behind the target vehicles. The appropriate vehicle on the momentary lane is controlled to the value by a length controlling device. The distance of the appropriate vehicle to the target vehicles is reduced to the other target distance according to preset criteria after docking the appropriate vehicle.
