<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the usability of an automatic document conveying device and an image reader. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A document delivery port 123A is provided with a check mechanism 133 permitting documents to flow through in a forward direction from a paper delivery roller 131 to a delivery tray 123 and forbidding the documents to flow through in a reverse direction from the delivery tray 123 to the paper delivery roller 131. Consequently, even if a user tries to insert and place a document erroneously in the delivery tray 123, the document can not be inserted and placed on the delivery tray 123 due to the check mechanism 133. Even in an environment where an upper paper feeding side ADF (automatic document conveying device) and a lower paper feeding side ADF are mixed, the user can be prevented from placing the document to be read in a wrong tray.
