An activated clay, characterized in that the pore volume in the pore diameter range of 1.7 to 100nm is 0.40 to 0.60cm3/g and the B/A pore volume ratio is 0.75 to 1.5 wherein A is pore volume in the pore diameter range of 1.7 to 11.5nm and B is pore volume in the pore diameter range of larger than 11.5nm to 100nm, each pore volume being determined by a nitrogen adsorption method, and in that the content of solid acids satisfying H0=-3.0 is 0.15 to 0.40mmol/g. A novel activated clay having more excellent bleaching performance than that of conventional activated clay; and a bleaching agent for animal or vegetable fats or oils or mineral oils which consists of the activated clay can be provided.
