A method and terminal device for transmitting the channel quality indicator CQI are provided in the embodiments of the invention. The method includes: obtaining a time deviation between the start position of a downlink HS-SCCH discontinuous reception wireless frame and the start position of an uplink DPCCH wireless frame (s101); obtaining a DPCCH burst length and a CQI transmission number (s102); determining a CQI offset sign based on the time deviation, the DPCCH burst length and the CQI transmission number (s103); transmitting the first CQI of a serving HS-DSCH cell and the second CQI of a secondary serving HS-DSCH cell on the HS-DPCCH channel, and determining a time offset between the first CQI and the second CQI based on the CQI offset sign (s104). By using the embodiments of the invention, the CQI offset sign is determined by considering comprehensively the time deviation, the DPCCH burst length and the CQI transmission number, the suitable CQI transmission order is realized, and the channel resource is saved by the greatest extent.
