Olefin polymerization reaction is terminated, and the formation of popcorn polymers in processes involving polymerization of one or more conjugated diolefins /sB ethylenically unsaturated monomers is inhibited by addition to the polymerization mixtures an adduct of formula <FORM:1115257/C3/1> wherein R is H, OH or C1- 5 alkyl; R1 is H C1- 9 hydrocarbyl or -COOR2 where R2 is C1- 5 alkyl; and R3 and R4 are C1- 7 alkyl (which may be substituted) or together with the N-atom form a 5- or 6-membered ring which may contain one or more further hetero atoms. The examples describe the effects of these adducts on polymerization of styrene and butadiene with or without "popcorn polymer seed."ALSO:Monomeric olefinic compounds, e.g. styrene, are stabilized by addition of adducts of formula <FORM:1115257/C4-C5/1> wherein R is H, OH or C1- 5 alkyl, R1 is H, C1- 9 hydrocarbyl or -COOR2 wherein R2 is C1- 5 alkyl; and R3 and R4 are C1- 7 alkyl (whic may be substituted) or together with the N atom form a 5- or 6-membered ring which may contain one or more further hetero atoms.ALSO:The invention comprises adducts of formula <FORM:1115257/C2/1> wherein R is H, OH or C1- 5 alkyl; R1 is H C1- 9 hydrocarbyl, or -COOR2 where R2 is C1- 5 alkyl; R3 and R4 are C1- 7 alkyl (which may be substituted) or together with the nitrogen atom from a 5- or 6-membered ring which may contain 1 or more further hetero atoms. They are prepared by gently warming the reactants (i.e. the polyhydroxyphenol and the substituted hydroxylamine). The above adducts are useful as stabilizers for ethylenic compounds, e.g. acrylonitrile.
