<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically perform a meshing operation after the mesh of a striker and a latch is released without driving an actuator, by using a door latch device which automatically performs the operation of meshing the striker with the latch, and the operation of releasing a meshed state, through the use of the drive of the actuator. <P>SOLUTION: On the completion (step F) of the closing of a door, the meshed state of the striker and the latch is released without driving the actuator, so that a trunk lid can be opened. In this case, the actuator is driven in a normally revolved manner, so that the state (step A) of completing the opening of the door can be brought about through steps G-K.
