A process for producing a fermentative end-product is disclosed comprising contacting a carbonaceous biomass with a microorganism that hydrolyses and ferments biomass and an external source of one or more enzymes that are capable of enhancing said hydrolysis, and allowing sufficient time for said hydrolysis and fermentation to produce a fermentative end product, wherein said one or more enzymes do not include a xylanase, hemicellulase, glucanase, or glucosidase, and wherein said external source is not said microorganism. Claims are also included for such a process wherein said enzyme is a cellulase and to a process comprising a recombinant microorganism and an external source of an enzyme capable of enhancing said hydrolysis. The microorganism is preferably Clostridium phytofermentans, and the fermentation end product is preferably ethanol. The microorganisms may also be modified to enhance activity of hydrolytic enzymes that are present endogenously in or are introduced heterologously into a host microorganism. |
