Method and device for detecting vehicles in the dark

The method involves recording an image of a traffic area in visible spectral range, and extracting regions connected from the image with a brightness which exceeds a threshold. The region is classified according to a size, and a confidence value, which represents a measure for similarity of a region of an image to a vehicle light, is formed for each region from the classification of the region and a physical parameter associated with the region. A determination is made from the confidence value that whether the region is assigned to the vehicle light. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling a headlamp of a vehicle (2) a device for controlling a headlamp of a vehicle.
