Vehicle multi-layer thermoplastic internal panel manufacture involves compression of a cold cut-foam section and foam layer onto a preheated carrier layer. The panel comprises carrier (4) and decorative (2) layers enclosing a thermoplastic foam core (3) with an area (5) of increased softness and/or thickness. The softer, thicker area is produced by attaching a cut section preform (6) of thermoplastic foam onto the foam core and compressing both layers so that the preform softens and adheres to the foam core while the edges (7,8) are molded to a sharp taper. Heat for the compression stage is supplied only from the preheated carrier layer. An Independent claim is made for the process equipment which includes a two part, non-heated press tool (13), an external heater for the carrier layer and a transporting system for a sandwich structure comprising the decorative layer, foam layer and cut foam preform on one hand and the carrier layer on the other hand. |
