Monofilament, multifilament or staple fibre yarns of thermoplastic material e.g. a polyamide, polyester, vinyl polymer or copolymer (polyacrylonitrile), polyolefin or cellulose acetate, or mixed yarns of thermoplastic fibres non-thermoplastic natural fibres are converted to textured, stub yarns by passing them through two or more spaced guides and temporarily high-twisting two or more of the yarns together in such manner that the point of union of the travelling yarns traverses between limits or follows a circular path so that the yarns undergo reciprocal high-twisting about each other in sequence at the union point i.e. each yarn is periodically a core around which the other yarns twist and then twists (perhaps with one or more other yarns) about the other, or another, yarn, setting e.g. by heating the intertwisted assembly and then separating the individual yarns. The resultant yarn comprises, along the length thereof, periodically recurring stubs between transitional sections Which merge into unstubbed, simply twisted sections, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). As shown, yarns 11, 12, 13, 14, are advanced by rollers 3, 4, and pass through eyes, disposed at the four corners of a square, in a disc 19 and are intertwisted at a point 15 which rotates, in consequence of differences of tension and the number of twists in the yarn and the torque acting on the united yarns, to effect the changing pattern of intertwist. The intertwisted assembly then passes through a guide 16 and heater 17 to a separation point 18 where the assembly is divided into individual yarns by a falsetwister (which also imparts the temporary high-twist) or a device for separating yarns (previously twisted together along a section) by continuously drawing them apart.
