A value defining a reference steady-state temperature to be reached at the heater element is determined. The determined value is transmitted as a target value to the glow plug control unit. The target valve is converted with an algorithm stored in the glow plug control unit taking into account characteristic values stored in the glow plug control unit. The target value effectuates a change of the steady-state temperature of the heater element from a reference steady-state temperature to another reference steady-state temperature.
