A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble, acylated nitrogen-containing compound having within its structure (A) a substantially hydrocarbon-substituted succinoyl, succinimidoyl or succinoyloxy radical wherein the hydrocarbon substituent contains at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms and (B) a nitrogen-containing group having a nitrogen atom attached directly to the succinic radical (A), the remaining valence or valences of said nitrogen being satisfied by one or more hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon, hydroxyalkylamino - substituted hydrocarbon, hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbon, alkoxy-substituted hydrocarbon, amino, carbamyl, thiocarbamyl, guanyl, or acylimidoyl radicals, or an N-hydrocarbon-substituted amino, carbamyl, thiocarbamyl, guanyl or acylimidoyl radical.ALSO:An oil-soluble acylated nitrogen composition is obtained by reacting a substantially hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid, halide, ester or anhydride, wherein the hydrocarbon substituent contains at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms and is derived from a substantially saturated olefin polymer, with at least 0.5 equivalents of ammonia, an aliphatic, aromatic, carbocyclic or heterocyclic amine, hydroxyalkyl-substituted alkylene diamine, urea, thiourea, hydrazine, guanidine, or amidine which may contain N-hydrocarbon substituents. The hydrocarbon substituent is preferably derived from polymers or copolymers of mono-olefins having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms, having a molecular weight of 700-5000. Detailed examples utilize a polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (prepared from a chlorinated polyisobutylene with maleic anhydride) in reaction with ammonia or amines. |
