The invention relates to a monitoring device for an elevator comprising several switching devices (1), which can be actuated without contact and which are series-connected to one another to form a security chain (S). The switching device (1) comprises an inquiry unit (2) and a responding unit (3). The responding unit (3) reacts exclusively to a pattern (M) generated by the inquiry unit (2) when they are sufficiently close. A reliable and trouble-free monitoring is made possible thus ensuring a reliable operation of the elevator installation.
