<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve mechanism for an internal combustion engine, having a structure sufficiently reducing a difference in a degree of thermal expansion between a support wall and a drive shaft, ensuring strength required for the drive shaft, and suppressing complication of the structure for satisfying requirements. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The variable valve mechanism includes: a control shaft 20 arranged between an engine valve and a camshaft, supported by the cam support wall 13 of a cylinder head, and axially moved; a slider 40 with the control shaft 20 inserted into a shaft hole itself; and an arm assembly 50 provided outside of the slider 40. The opening/closing characteristic of the engine valve is changed through the relative rotation of the slider 40 and arm assembly 50. The cam support wall 13 and control shaft 20 are made from materials having the same coefficient of thermal expansion, and the control shaft 20 is directly supported by the cam support wall 13.
