PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, improved in failure prediction accuracy by acquiring information for a surface state of a fixing belt (or roller) by use of gloss dependency of a range finding sensor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a mechanism for carrying paper by rotation of an endless belt or roller, the mechanism includes a reflected light detection means which detects reflected light from the paper passed to the downstream side in the carrying direction and the endless belt or roller. The apparatus acquires information for the gloss of the endless belt or roller by an output in observation of the endless belt or roller outside a paper detection section of the reflected light detection means.
