<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a characteristic-varying type switching material which varies in characteristics in response to an external stimulus and changes to another material having the same composition but different properties and a switching method for achieving excellent characteristics for a magnetic material or an adsorbent. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The characteristic-varying type switching material includes a polymer metal complex containing structural units of the formula [XY<SB>2</SB>L<SB>2</SB>]<SB>n</SB>(wherein, X is a divalent cation selected from the group consisting of those of cobalt, nickel and copper; Y is a counter ion containing at least three fluorine atoms; L is 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)benzene) and enables switching between the gate-type and the I-type characteristics by using it.
