<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single tube type hydraulic shock absorber capable of exhibiting necessary and sufficient damping force in accordance with a piston speed even during the compression stroke. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This single tube type hydraulic shock absorber is provided with a cylinder 1, a free piston 2 partitioning an inside of the cylinder 1 to a liquid chamber L and a gas chamber G, a piston 3 slidably inserted into the cylinder 1 and partitioning the liquid chamber L to two operation chambers R1 and R2, and a rod 4 movably inserted into the cylinder 1 and connected to the piston 3. A partition member 7 partitions the gas chamber G to a free piston side chamber 5 and an opposite free piston side chamber 6, and a passage communicating the free piston side chamber 5 with the opposite free piston side chamber 6 is provided in the partition member 7, and a valve element 17 for giving resistance to the flow of gas is disposed in a half way of the passage.
