PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device which by applying a high voltage between a center electrode 31 and a ground electrode 41, generates surface discharge on an inner face of an insulator and plasmolyzes part of gas in a chamber, then, plasmolyzes a great part of the gas in the chamber by generating aerial discharge in the chamber, and injects a plasma jet from a cylinder aperture A, wherein wear of the ground electrode edge and its vicinity used in the surface discharge is suppressed, and increase of voltage necessary for generating the surface discharge is controlled. SOLUTION: A first edge 31b located in the vicinity of the sidewall inner face of the insulator 2 and a second edge 31c separated from the vicinity of the sidewall inner face of the insulator are provided on the center electrode side end face 31a of the ground electrode 31.
