<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and accurately measure the quality of the surface of a magnetic body, on which information is to be recorded. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An inspection method includes a first magnetization step of magnetizing, in a certain direction, the whole of a magnetic body pattern composed of two longitudinal patterns having longitudinal shapes in a down track direction and a combination pattern for combining the two longitudinal patterns; a second magnetization step of magnetizing one of the longitudinal shapes in the direction opposite to the first magnetization step; a first read step of reading a signal from one of the longitudinal shapes; a second read step of reading a signal from the other of the longitudinal shapes; and a decision step of deciding the quality of the magnetic recording medium on which the magnetic body pattern is formed, based on the result of comparison between the signal read in the first read step and the signal read in the second read step.
