<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize a table structure and automatically decide on an attribute of the smallest rectangular shape in a slip recognition apparatus that automatically recognizes a layout of a slip. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Items are classified into a logic row from a connection relationship in a row direction of the smallest rectangular shape that is extracted from a slip image; logic rows that have sequentially the same row structure are put into a block; and blocks that have the same column structure are put into a unit of logic column between blocks that connect to the top and the bottom of a table. From this table structure, a block that has the largest number of belonging rows is decided on as a body portion; an upper portion and a lower portion of the block are decided on as a header portion and a footer portion, respectively; the header portion is set as a title portion; character recognition is performed in a logic column unit to decide on an attribute of the title portion; and an attribute of the smallest rectangular shape of the body portion is decided on from the attribute of the title portion.
