A polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided with a membrane-electrode-assembly (5) comprising a pair of electrodes (4a, 4b) which sandwich a portion inside the peripheral edge of a polymer electrolyte membrane (1) therebetween, a first separator (6a), and a second separator (6b).  A first reaction gas passage (8) is formed on one principal surface of the first separator (6a), and a second reaction gas passage (9) is formed on one principal surface of the second separator (6b) so as to comprise second rib portions (12).  The first reaction gas passage (8) is formed in such a manner that the ratio of the width of the first reaction gas passage in an upstream portion (18b) thereof to the second rib portion (12) is larger than the ratio of the width of the first reaction gas passage in a downstream portion (18c) thereof to the second rib portion (12), and formed in such a manner that the ratio of the width of the first reaction gas passage in the upstream portion (18b) thereof to the second rib portion (12) is a predetermined ratio.
