<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas recirculation device for suppressing deposit accumulation in an exhaust gas recirculation passage of an internal combustion engine where exhaust gas flowing in an exhaust passage is recirculated to an intake passage, while improving fuel consumption with exhaust gas recirculation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The exhaust gas recirculation passage 30 of the internal combustion engine 10 consists of an upstream side recirculation passage 32 for recirculating exhaust gas from the upstream side of an exhaust emission control device 27 in the exhaust passage 23 to the intake passage 22, and a downstream side recirculation passage 33 for recirculating exhaust gas from the downstream side of the exhaust emission control device 27 to the intake passage 22. An electronic control device 60 controls the ratio of the amount of the exhaust gas to be recirculated through the upstream side recirculation passage 32 to the intake passage 22 to the amount of the exhaust gas to be recirculated through the downstream side recirculation passage 33 to the intake passage 22 in accordance with the generation amount of soot in a combustion chamber 12.
